joining us. i'm j.c. hayward. u.s. officials are trying to get more information on exactly what is happening on the ground in algeria. some hostages are celebrating their freedom. but tara mergener reports the fate of others is still unknown. >> reporter: these former hostages say they're glad to have made it out of the algerian gas plant where they worked alive. >> we were lucky that we are still alive and everything is good. >> reporter: this hostage described being held in a room with 200 others before the algerian army launched its rescue mission. he says as his captors fought against algerian forces, he escaped out a back door. plans to evacuate u.s. survivors to other hospitals in europe. but there are hostages still inside and anywhere from 18 to 60 people. from the u.s., japan, norway, and britain. >> this is a large and complex site and they are still pursuing terrorists and

possibly some of the hostages in other areas of the site. >> reporter: an al-qaeda linked terrorist group called the masked bring gay stormed the -- brigade stormed the compound wednesday in retaliation for the air strikes in mali. there are reports the group wants to negotiate a swap. two americans for two terror suspects in u.s. custody. u.s. officials are working to determine the fate of the u.s. citizens involved. they estimate there are about seven or eight of them and u.s. defense secretary leon panetta has issued a warning. >> terrorists could be unnoticed. they will -- could be on notice. they will find no sanctuary. >> reporter: the obama administration says it's in contact with algerian authorities. but says it's been difficult to get accurate information. tara mergener for cbs news, the state department. >> the hostages homelands are angry with algeria for having launched the rescue raid without advance consultation. well, an accident caused a

traffic nightmare in columbia, maryland this morning. a car rammed a tractor-trailer that was parked on the side of i-95. rescue crews got the trapped driver out and rushed him to the baltimore shock trauma. the northbound lanes of i-95 were closed for several hours but traffic is moving this afternoon in that area. maryland lawmakers are working to change a controversial court ruling on pit bulls. last year, maryland's highest court labeled pit bulls as inherently dangerous. the ruling made it extremely difficult for owners to defend themselves in court over dog bite accusations. lawmakers are working on legislation which would give pit bull owners the same legal standing as owners of all other breeds. health officials in montgomery county have announced a free flu vaccination clinic. on tuesday, vaccines will be given from 2:00 in the afternoon until 5:00 p.m. at the dennis avenue health

clinic in silver spring. you can make appointments through the county's website. montgomerycountymd.gov/flu. or you can call 311. we could learn later today how a lottery winner was killed. authorities are exhuming the body of a chicago man who was poisoned after winning the lottery. chicago area investigators believe that he died from cyanide poisoning. in july, he won $425,000 in the lottery. authorities hope a forensic autopsy will determine that poison got into his system. if he swallowed. inhaled or was injected with it. the medical examer is expected to -- examiner is expected to release finding later today. notre dame linebacker manti te'o is facing some tough

questions. late-year he receive -- last year he received national sympathy after he said his girlfriend died of leukemia. earlier this week the sports blog deadspin revealed that te'o's girlfriend actually never existed. he had an online relationship with a woman he believed to be real but it turns out he had a fake relationship with a -- a relationship with a fake online toyota. dead spinodes a -- identity. dead spin says a friend of te'o's is behind the stunt. te'o said that he was cupped into the fake -- dupes into the fake relationship and he was humiliates and some are wondering if he had a role in the hoax. after a decade of denial, cyclist lance armstrong has admitted that he used performance-enhancing drugs in order to win all seven tour de france championships. vinita nair has the latest on the extensive interview with oprah winfrey. >> reporter: lance armstrong's long abated confession came -- awaited confession came after

a simple request for a cigarette lighter ended in a brutal beating. and it was all caught on camera. police in philadelphia say the suspect attacked his victim at a subway stop yesterday. police say that a man asked for a lighter and then began punching a woman and threw her onto train tracks. the unidentified woman suffered minor injuries and the suspect is in police custody. a russian firefighter is knocked off his ladder while trying to get to a child who was trapped in a burning apartment. you can see the chunks of snow slide off the roof and strike the rescuer. luckily. a fellow firefighter prevented the man from falling to the

current temperature 34 in leesburg. 36 in mans is and in d.c -- manassas and in d.c.. 36 in culpeper and in orange. 40 degrees in fredericksburg and it feels like it's only 23 degrees in gaithersburg with that windchill. feels like 9 in west meinicke -- 29 in westminster and it feels like 28 degrees in luray with that windchill. and as i nexted before the windilying in the cooler and drier -- wind bringing in the cooler and drier aero. we have an -- air. we have an alberta clipper from canada bringing some snow showers to the great lakes regions. but as that system descends towards us it will bring another reinforcing shot of colder air. the cold air that we have out there right now is not the end of it. we're going to see a little bit of a brief warmup before that next reinforcing shot gets here. so saturday looks like a better day than today. but we're still going to have temperatures reaching into the 30s this afternoon. that's it. and then your forecast lows all the way down to 28 in leesburg

and gaithersburg. 29 in d.c.. with 24 in fredericksburg. and believe it or not, i think a couple of places could get down to right around 20 degrees or even the upper teens in some of the kind of outlying areas if you're not near the center of town. where you tend to get a little bit warmer during overnight. 23 cull pepper and orange for the overnight lows. it's really cold stuff and at least the windchill goes by the wayside overnight tonight. and then saturday, looks lick a great day with the high of 50 degrees. lots of sunshine. a light breeze out of the south helping to bring in that milder air. but then on sunday, that's when that reinforcing shot starts to make its way toward us. so we're back down to seasonable 46 degrees. mostly sunny skies. and then monday, looks like a very chilly day. 35 degrees for your high. it will be colder with that chance for some flurries, no accumulating snow in this forecast. but it will be cold and breezy for the inauguration and then heading back to work and school, high temperatures only in the 20s. stay with us, we're going to go to the kitchen when we come
